The Spaces Between
My black and white photo series takes a close look at gender and aims to challenge the stereotypes associated with it through abstraction. In my photographs, mixed fabrics and daily tasks like getting dressed are examined to invite the viewer to let go of any assumptions they might make about gender. Shadows, negative space and the overall abstraction of the subject matter makes it difficult for the viewer to create an idea of what the gender being shown is. Any gender can be applied to the subject. Therefore, the viewer can focus on the content of the photographs, largely free from gender associations.
